FINALLY, I'm getting ready to release my album! It will be called "Flux" and the track order will be something like:

I have a new song up called Nostalgia. It's basically a gloomy hybrid of break-beat and arena rock---and probably the title track of my album. Enjoy.

Nostalgia

Why do I make music? In no particular order: To find an outlet for my frustrations. To test my creativity, diligence, and hope. To show others my best, and suggest my worst. To present ideas often considered secrets. To be a tad rebellious. To make life a bit magical when it is at its most mundane. To prove you don't need thousands of dollars of equipment to create whatever you hear (good or bad?). For attention and approval. For the rush I get out of performing and even playing back my music.

I have electronic music influences, but I also grew up around rock and pop. Those sensibilities---the immediacy, accessibility, and occaisional relentlessness of those genres---seem to influence me. I am never happy with a song unless it exploits as many sounds as possible while still keeping its flavor. And so I keep adding, and adding, until it is finally time to sing my lyrics. Then I start adding again! There are three artists that stand out in my mind for all this, but also for ingenuity, creativity, and integrity.

BT consistently sets a stellar standard for production, creating incredible, surprisingly emotive, sound-scapes. His debut, Ima, showed me that trance need not feel like destructive rumination, but can be a celebration. His use of "Eastern" instruments made it wonderfully other-worldly. ESCM showed his technical mastery, and, like Ima, had elaborate movements that take listeners on the ride of their lives. I found much of his later work a bit too formulaic and uncertain, but This Binary Universe was an excellent shock; perfectionism tempered with patience.

Underworld surprises with each new song, never happy with one style, yet always jamming to the tenth power live. Their joy despite their troubled past is truly inspiring. A dark decade of trying to be pop-stars somehow led them to the fore-front of electronic music. Karl, the lead singer, tells colorful stories that are both documentary and, in a subtle sense, autobiographical. Rick, covering much of the music-side, uses and manipulates unique sounds from digital to analog to "found", with a new musical pallette for each song. The result is a band that never stays in one place. They also manage to stay a bit ahead of the times with their downloadable work and incorporation of multimedia.

Imogen heap may be the most inspiring to me. With a bit of elbow grease and a few toys she turned out an album filled to the brim with that clean, beautiful "stuff" that makes pop popular, and overflowing with soul in a genre often ridiculed as soulless. Speak for Yourself is a triumph, a continuing reminder for a lone, ambitious musician that music is alive and well.
